1
To overindulge
in cloying perfumes
will not hotwire
stalled romance.
Splendid scent perhaps,
but in excess
it’s a one-way pass
to oblivion.
Purer love
in the whiffing glass
reflects a sweet
honesty,
blue sky––serene, cloudless,
two lovers
mutually
merciful.
2
Dime-store mentality
opts for
perfume dousers
to engineer
splendid
chameleon tactics:
presenting
a false presence
worthy of oblivion.
Pretending to be
purer “than thou,”
these charlatans,
truth under painted glass,
who sell sky
with serene faces
(two!)
are never merciful.
3
He tossed hyperboles
immersed in perfume
she worked splendid wiles
in all California,
her presence everywhere,
Untouched forever
By oblivion.
Purer than snow
She wasn’t.
She shattered
His glass heart,
Dropped sky on him.
Serene now:
“Two words…
‘Merciful Lord!’”

It’s so nice to have you back, Sal.
And great to be back! It’s always an honor for me to be on your pages.
As usual, your poems offer something for us to think about, learn from, be enlightened/amused about.
“Merciful” is an all encompassing word the world needs to be made more aware of the benefits of… and you do it so well Sal!
Thanks, Jean and Anna, for reading and liking my poetry.
