Marty Basden Debuts

I sense your silent approach
anticipate a fingertip to nape
welcome the chill scampering
across my shoulders
the warmth of your lips

The coffee
can wait

From The Tree I used To Climb

Now that I can whittle on dried branches
having no particular employ to attend
my mind wanders from the pile of chips
dry and fragile at my feet to the tree
whose limb this used to be

It bore twigs and leaves
funneled sap to sunlight
chlorophyll to root
thickened ring by ring
to be this stick about to become
a walking aid for aged legs
once fit to climb and hang
from just such a limb

After we had loved

each other intently

I slept

She left
