To Sylvia
By John Kaniecki

Playing rhythm guitar
Missing a string
Having a kingdom
Without a king
*
A brand new morn
And there is no sun
Heaven on a clear night
Not a single star in sight
That’s how life would be
To me
Without you
*
But the guitar strums sweet
The kingdom is complete
The sun shines rosy and grand
And heaven is just how it’s planned.

The poem To Sylvia was published originally on Jerry Jazz Muscian.
This poem was written for my wife Sylvia. I write a diverse style of poetry. I knew this one was very tight. I found on a website somebody who is an ‘expert’ on poetry. He gives advice for a fee. However he ‘critiques’ one poem for free to get an idea of what he does. I sent him this poem. I’m not saying this is a great poem but it is tight. I knew realistically if there were improvements they would be minor. His advice to me was to abandon the rhyme and concentrate on the first aspect of the poem. Needless to say I didn’t listen to him.
